Periodontal (gum) disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. Teeth can become lost due to gum disease even if they have never had a “cavity”!
What is periodontal disease?
An infection of the gums, caused by bacteria in dental plaque. It attacks the bone, the ligament and the gums that support your teeth.
Although gum disease is usually painless, the following are some of the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease.
- Red, puffy or swollen and tender gums
- Persistant bad breath
- Gums that bleed spontaneously, or when brushing and flossing
- Gums that are receding making your teeth appear to be getting longer
- Pus between the teeth and gums
- Loose teeth
- Shifting of teeth causing spacing
How is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed?
A comprehensive oral examination includes a thorough periodontal assessment which is performed by either the dentist or the registered dental hygienist. This gum assessment involves measurements which help us determine if the bone, ligament and gums that support your teeth have been affected. The clinical examination is often complemented by dental x-rays to reach a diagnosis of the degree of periodontal disease.
Can periodontal disease be treated?
Yes! We offer non-surgical gum therapy to our clients with early to moderate periodontal disease. Performed by our registered dental hygienists, this treatment combines thorough instrumentation with chemotherapeutics, and a thorough, non-complicated home care routine.
For individuals that require additional treatment for more advanced periodontal disease, we can recommend a periodontal specialist from our network of specialists with whom we have long standing professional relationships.
